Self-discovery: To know ourselves better; learning about ourselves

Video Debriefing
If your friends, family and teachers were asked to describe your character, what would they say?
I believe my teachers would say I'm outgoing and talkative, yet I am an intelligent girl as well.
My friends would say I am a fun person to hang out with and a great listener who helps them when they need it.
My family would say I'm a silly, caring, talkative, chocolate loving, good girl.

Discuss & Reflect
Who would you say is a "person of character?" What positive character qualities does this person posses? What choices has this person made in the past that illustrate character?
My father is a "person of character". He is quite serious when it comes down to his family and his job. He is a loving father and husband. He is a diligent worker and can be counted on. He is wise and is strong. As he grew, he received all these qualities, and more.

School Subjects and Careers

Subject: Science
H C U: U
Career: Anesthesiologist

Job Description
What duties do people in this career have?
What skills do they have?
Without anesthesiologist, surgery would be impossible. Anesthesiologists are doctors who administer the drugs or gases that prevent patients from feeling any pain or sensation during surgery. But that’s not all that these specialists do. They are responsible for the well-being of the patient before, during, and after surgery.

Education
What education and training do you need to enter this career?
What other qualifications are good to have?
Which college or other post high school programs are related to this career?
3 to 4 year bachelor's degree then medical school for 4 years. Those who want to be anesthesiologists must then undertake a 3 to 4-year residency program in anesthesia. Residencies are periods of practical, on-the-job training, which take place in hospitals or other medical settings. Applicants must have an excellent academic record, high scores on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), and letters of recommendation from teachers and advisors. Medical schools also consider things like character, leadership qualities, and extracurricular activities when making admissions decisions. A good program would be to get into a medical program in high school or even in college.

Person's Name
How did this person get into this career?
What does this person say about opportunities to get into this career?
What advice does this person have for people who want to get into this career?
Doreen:She studied health sciences and biochemistry and go into an anesthesiologist program after medical school.
There always seems to be a shortage of doctors worldwide, especially in anesthesiology and certain other specialties. The only way to get into the field, though, is by going to medical school and then taking specialized training in anesthesiology.

Summary-Your Views
Do you think this is a tough career to get into? What is the most difficult part?
Would you be willing to complete the education and training necessary to work in this career? Why or why not?
This is a tough career to get into. It takes a lot of schooling and I don't even know if I may get into medical school. I think I would want to complete the education and training necessary to work in this career because I want to be in the medical field. This career has caught my eye since I heard about what they do. It sounds like an important job to me. But I am not quite certain about the long hours. If I want to have a family, how will I raise my children, but have to leave during the night for shifts? So I believe my answer is undecided, for now.

Letter To Me

Melissa,

I wish I would have known exactly what was going to happen in the future. You graduated as Valedictorian and was offered a scholarship to U.T. Austin. You went to medical school and received your Bachelor's and Master's degree. You are still working on your PhD. Mom and Dad saw you walk down to get your diploma. Dad even walked you down the aisle. You got married to a wonderful man and had children. You now live in Washington State with your own Doctor's Office. All of our dreams have come true. You just need to push yourself and all this can be yours. Study harder, do extra credit, and work past your full potential. Strive to get what you want like me, and you'll get it.
Sincerely,
Melissa (From the Future)
